“I have a lot in me still” Gomez headlines in Farmington
Joe Martinez-Gomez has fought a who’s-who of welterweights in New Mexico in his career.
Taking on the likes of Josh Torres, Guero Sanchez, the late Vicente Garcia to name a few .
Gomez will return to the ring this Friday after a five years layoff, in his last fight he defeated Arturo Crespin.
Gomez who turned professional 20 years ago, has a record of 23-8-1. He will headline a card on his home turf of Farmington, NM, on a card promoted by Isidro’ Castillo’s School of Hard Knocks.
Gomez feels he has a lot left and wants to do what he loves to do.
“I really feel like I have enough left in me to give to people the great fights they deserve. I'm one who doesn't drink, smoke, or abuse my body in any way. I probably would've been done by now,but unfortunately, some fights have fallen through, and during covid, boxing was put on hold in a lot of places.” Said Gomez
Gomez wants to show he has something left to gove the people in the northern four corners area a show.
“My motivation comes from the idea of being one of the best fighters to come out of our tri-city area. My family is a huge motivation. I see my wife and all the extra work she does during training camp as far as with the kids and errands.” Said Gomez “I feel I would be doing our marriage a disservice if I didn't give it my absolute all in the fight. My daughter (Jazzlyn) and son (Emmett), I want to show that through hard work, anything is possible. My son Elijah, who has special needs, motivates me in the sense that he's not able to do all the physical attributes of some people, yet he wears a big smile on his face daily.”
When Gomez decides to finally hang up the gloves he already has a successful supplement business. Locations in Aztec and Farmington, but for now boxing is still in his heart and wants to fight until he doesn’t have that fire.
