Esquibel passed away this past Sunday.
The boxing community and my words on a person gone too soon.
I remember Matthew when he was a little boy, training with his cousin Jesus Banuelos and under the training of his uncle Freddie Esquibel at the old South side gym.
Always remember him running around the gym with little Sammy Piar and brother James Piar Jr.
Matthew was a skinny little guy, but he always had a great smile, always shaking hands and giving hugs.
He was the kind of person you could never not like. I have never heard anyone say anything bad about him.
As time passed, the little sqrawny kid became a father of three. He was a caring father, always taking his kids around local establishments, pizza, parks to play, being a great father.
Matthew worked for the city, but had his passion for boxing. He complied a 12-1-1, as a professional. Although he stopped fighting in 2019. His sudden passing was a shock to the boxing community. He will always be missed and loved.

One of the nicest fighters I have ever known! I turned pro in 08 on his undercard. I'll never forget seeing him go down but rising up and pulling off the win. Gave me so much inspiration seeing his heart and will to win. Gone way too soon😩 Deepest condolences to the Esquibel family! You will be missed champ
