Albuquerque Could Be in Line for a Big Fall and Winter of Boxing

New Mexico boxing fans could have plenty to look forward to as the sport heads into the fall and winter months.

While several potential events remain in the discussion stage, there is growing activity surrounding some of the state’s top fighters and promoters.

One of the biggest possibilities is a return home for Angelo Leo.

Angelo Leo Could Return to Albuquerque

To defend his title, the former world champion and current IBF featherweight champion could potentially return to Albuquerque with ProBox during the fall or winter.

Nothing has been officially announced regarding a date, opponent or venue. However, the if Leo doesn’t fight in his hometown, he will look to defend his title soon before years out .

Leo has already made history in Albuquerque, winning the IBF featherweight championship at Tingley Coliseum in 2024.

A return home would undoubtedly be a major attraction for New Mexico boxing fans.

Abraham Perez Could Defend WBA Interim Title at Home

Another major possibility involves Albuquerque’s own Abraham “The Hammer” Perez.

Perez recently captured the WBA interim flyweight championship, establishing himself as one of New Mexico’s leading championship-level fighters.

There has been talk of Perez making his first defense in Albuquerque, which would give local fans an opportunity to see the newly crowned champion defend his title in front of his hometown crowd.

Perez’s promoter, Dmitry Salita, has publicly discussed the possibility of bringing the champion back to Albuquerque for his first defense, working with Legacy Promtions could help bring it to th duke city.

If that happens this fall or winter, it would be another significant championship event for the Duke City.

Major Welterweight Battle Also Being Discussed

There is also talk of a major welterweight matchup potentially coming to Albuquerque, with the possibility of the WBA Intercontinental welterweight championship being at stake.

The potential welterweight fight would be a separate event from any Leo or Perez appearance.

While the bigger championship possibilities remain in the works, Pat Holmes already has professional boxing planned for October at Ohkay Casino in Ohkay Owingeh.

Holmes has been a consistent promoter of professional boxing in New Mexico, providing opportunities for fighters from throughout the state and bringing live professional boxing to Northern New Mexico.

Legacy Promotions, has put on 2 cards in 2026, looks to put another one before the years out.

Kings promotions has been keeping las cruces fighter busy down south. Along with Red Owl who staged a card last Friday.

Donald Sanchez DSP, who had a successful card, and hopefully will comeback and do it again

The October event will give local fighters another opportunity to compete in front of New Mexico boxing fans and adds another date to what could be a very active fall boxing schedule.

With Holmes’ October event, along with the potential Leo, Perez and welterweight events, New Mexico boxing could be headed toward a very busy final few months of 2026.
