Yoruba Moreu Jr. Is Taking the Road Less Traveled: “I Want to Be Great”
By Andy Rivera
In boxing, there are different paths to success. Some fighters take their time building their records, while others are willing to test themselves against tougher competition early in their careers.
Yoruba Moreu Jr. knows which road he wants to take.
Preparing for the toughest test of his young professional career, Moreu Jr. will face Ariel Moreno (11-2-1) of El Paso, Texas, on November 7 at Inn of the Mountain Gods Resort & Casino. Remarkably, this challenge comes in just his fourth professional fight.
For Moreu Jr., the decision to face experienced opposition is about more than winning another fight. It’s about getting noticed, improving his skills, and moving closer to the destination he has set for himself.
Moreu Jr. explained that every professional fighter has a different reason for entering the sport. His own motivation is straightforward: he wants to become a great fighter, and he believes the best way to accomplish that is to compete against better opponents.
He isn’t interested in taking the easy road. He wants to challenge himself, prove what he can do, and make sure people see him as he works toward his goals.
That mindset also connects to the legacy of two legendary New Mexico fighters who inspire him: Johnny Tapia and Bobby Foster. Both left their mark on the sport, and Moreu Jr. hopes to follow a path that challenges him to reach his full potential.
“I want to be great,” is the message behind his approach to the sport.
At this early stage of his career, Moreu Jr. understands that taking on tougher opponents comes with risks. But he also recognizes that facing better competition can provide valuable experience and help reveal what he needs to improve.
His upcoming matchup with Moreno represents an opportunity to put that philosophy into action. Moreno brings an 11-2-1 record into the contest, making this a significant challenge for the young prospect.
For Moreu Jr., however, the challenge is part of the plan.
He has his own road to travel, and he intends to take it by facing the fighters who can push him toward the level he wants to reach.
On November 7, boxing fans will have an opportunity to see how the young fighter responds to the biggest test of his professional career so far.
For Yoruba Moreu Jr., the goal isn’t simply to build a record. It’s to become the fighter he believes he can be—and he’s willing to face better competition to get there.
