Kaleb Medina Embraces Tough Professional Debut Against Veteran John “Smiley” Herrera

This coming Saturday night at Embassy Suites in Albuquerque, Las Vegas, New Mexico’s Kaleb Medina will take the next step in his boxing career when he makes his professional debut against 16-year veteran John “Smiley” Herrera on the Donald Sanchez Promotions card.

For Medina, boxing has been part of his life since he was eight years old. As his athletic career evolved, he moved to Rio Rancho, New Mexico, where he pursued wrestling and continued to develop as a competitor.

After wrestling, Medina returned to the sport that first captured his passion. He went on to compile more than 100 amateur bouts, building the experience and confidence that convinced him it was time to turn professional.

“I want to see how far boxing can take me, hopefully to become a world champion one day and take care of my family financially,” Medina said. “It’s just something I’d like to give 100% to right now in this stage of my life, as I know the window can get smaller.”

Rather than taking an easier path in his first professional fight, Medina wanted a challenge from the outset.

“I know a lot of fighters make their pro debut against opponents who may have little or no experience,” Medina said. “But I knew fighting Herrera was a step up for a pro debut, considering he’s been a pro for 16 years and has over 30 fights. I figured that would be the best way to get my feet wet.”

Medina credits his recent development to the team around him, particularly his boxing coach and strength coach.

“Training with Manuel Anaya and strength and conditioning coach Leroy Bazan has been great for my development,” Medina said. “They’ve helped prepare me for this moment, and I feel ready to showcase everything we’ve been working on.”

Herrera’s experience will present an immediate test for Medina, but it’s one the New Mexico prospect eagerly accepted. Medina believes facing a seasoned veteran will provide a valuable measuring stick as he begins his professional journey.

For Medina, the debut is about more than simply earning his first victory. It is the first step toward pursuing his dream of becoming a world champion while creating a better future for his family.
