Yoruba Moreu Jr. will step in the ring tonight in Tennessee for the first time as a professional. Moreu Jr. a decorated amateur will face Nidra Sherman 1-16, (16 loses in a row), originally Moreu was to face Weisu Johnson (3-37-1).

To no fault of Moreu, he faces who is out in front of him.

Jacob Maes, manager of Moreu told boxingnewmexico, when asked about choices of opponent's. It was a no brainer to still fight.

“Johnson was picked by the promoter (Christy Martin Promotions) , he fell through, so when we looked for a last minute replacement, it was fight Sherman or not fight, it was a no brainer to fight at this point.”

In a time where fighters build records against softer opponents, get wins to puff the record up, only to look out matched when they step it up, Maes sees Moreu’s path different.

“I don’t want to give false hopes to a fighter, I know he has to fight tougher competition each time out.” Says Maes

Moreu who is a well mannered young man has the tools to go a long way in the sport had a decorated amateur career. He went to the semi finals in the Olympic trials in 2024.

After taking a year off to prepare his body and mind for the pro ranks, now is ready to make the splash tonight.

Maes plans for Moreu is to keep him busy this year going forward.

“My plan is to have him fight 3-4 this year and hope to get a wbc youth title fight.”

In agreement with Maes the only way to get to bigger fights is to step it up each fight.

When I asked friend and legend Sugar Ray Leonard years ago, how does one build a fighter?

“Each fight you fight better fighters, but in the end if your fighter has the goods, it doesn’t matter who or where the fight.”

Moreu has the goods, tonight is the start to see how far they will take him.

Prediction - Given the late replacement and record, Moreu by 1st-2nd round stoppage.
