Las Cruces, NM: Austin Trout aims to maintain his undefeated BKFC record as he faces Luis Palamino for the second time. Trout previously defeated Palamino by unanimous decision in February 2024 to claim the BKFC Welterweight title.
Trout (4-0) is the only boxer in history to have won both a legitimate world boxing title and the BKFC crown. If he triumphs over Palamino again, Trout will compete against Franco Tenaglia in 2026 for the world Lightweight BKFC title. Tenaglia recently secured a victory over Ben Bonner in October with a split decision, moving on to the finals of the BKFC lightweight tournament. The bout between Trout and Palamino is the other semifinal match, with the winner advancing to face Tenaglia.
Transitioning from boxing to bareknuckle fighting, Trout has adapted successfully where many other boxers have not. Aware that it was a different sport, he leveraged his speed and boxing skills to facilitate his move to BKFC.
Trout stated, "I realized I needed to understand that the balance is different, and I must stay focused to take punches at any moment. Unlike in boxing, where the referee can break us apart during a clinch, in BKFC, fighters can throw punches while clinched with fewer separations by the referee."
Many people in the brief history of the BKFC have said that if Trout succeeds in the Lightweight tournament, he will be considered a contender for the title of GOAT in BKFC, having secured both the Welterweight and Lightweight world titles.
After recovering from a broken arm sustained during his title defense in April, Trout successfully defended his title by winning a split decision against Carlos Trinidad-Snake. Although the injury delayed him somewhat, he was medically cleared but chose to take an additional two months to ensure he was fully prepared for the start of training for Palamino.
"I was prepared and cleared, but I wanted to take my time and proceed at my own pace to get ready for Palamino. I feel fantastic and ready to win another title."
When asked about handling Thanksgiving with all the food while training, Trout laughed and said, "I'll watch everyone for now and celebrate after I win."
Trout and Palamino will fight this coming December 5th in Hollywood Florida. Trout takes one fight at a time, when people ask him whats next?
"I don't have a set schedule for when it's time to step away from fighting. I love the sport, which has been a blessing to me, but as we age, it takes a toll on our bodies. I aim to win the BKFC Lightweight (155) title, and then we'll see what comes next."
Already inducted into the New Mexico Boxing Hall of Fame, Trout is now being considered for the New Mexico Sports Hall of Fame, an honor he has long deserved. If he succeeds in winning the BKFC lightweight title, he might have another Hall of Fame induction in his future.
Pretty impressive for someone who is among the most humble individuals in combat sports.
